Julia Barber | Artist Spotlight: Julia Barber

How many years have you been a freelance illustrator?
I’ve been freelancing now for 5 years, juggling illustration with part time library work. Illustrating can be quite a lonely business so it’s great to get out and work with people face to face. The library is off course great for inspiration and reference!
How reliable are you?
Very I would like to think. I have never been late on a job, if a deadline is fixed, that deadline will be met. I try and avoid ‘all nighters’ but if it’s a very tight deadline and that is what is necessary, that is what I shall do!
In a commercial sense what can your work be applied too?
My work is quite bright and colourful and has been used in all areas of illustration, editorial, advertising and packaging. I have yet to illustrate a book cover and this is something I would love to do in the future.
Who are your top clients?
My top ‘Wow’ clients would be Natwest and Expedia, for both of whom I produced illustrations for their ad campaigns. My top regular clients would be my local Broads Authority.
Apart from illustration what other skills do you have?
I figure skate competitively (NOT at an elite level I might add!)
What’s your favourite sandwich filling?
That’s a difficult one, depends what day of the week it is! Today, a warm baguette with pesto, roasted onion, mushroom and peppers, topped with mozzarella and fresh basil.
