Recently I was approached by ClutchMOV Magazine to contribute a feature for their upcoming Fall 2015 print issue, “The Twelve Best Moths I Found In My Yard This Summer”. ClutchMOV started as “a free, online publication that delivers creative coverage of the Mid-Ohio Valley,” and their continued support from the community has led them to expanding into print. The magazine is beautifully printed in full, rich color on thick matte paper, a real dream to create for as an illustrator.
Their editor generously offered free rein over the subject and content of my feature. I decided on a mini-guide to the Moths of the Mid-Ohio Valley, as I had taken a personal interest in them this past summer. Working from photo reference and using my background in natural history illustration, I created twelve individual watercolors in a “field guide” style of illustration. Last was combining these pieces into the full layout you see here, which will play over two pages. I had a lot of fun putting this final piece together to be both beautiful and educational!
