Art/history: First of all, this is not that Ribisi fella! This is somethin’ else – someone who should have eclipsed Elvis. In many ways, he did. He was more humble, more talented – even on his earliest singles, he experimented with multi-tracking, distortion & overdubbing – & wrote his own material. Your first exposure to his music was probably through a Sex Pistols or Sid Vicious single. Treat yourself to the originals, though, & enjoy the short rainbow burst of his life. A ’77 special was never on his cards. His hire car – speeding, despite repeated requests to the driver from its passengers to slow down & be sensible – hit a kerb in Chippenham, Wiltshire & threw everyone onto the verge. The crash was fatal for Eddie Cochran, who, having shielded his girlfriend from the impact, died in 1960 at the age of 21. It’s still the most exciting thing ever to have happened in Chippenham. I know. I used to live there.
