Tarot in Wonderland from Llewellyn

My most recent project for Llewellyn Worldwide Publishing involved creating artwork for a full set of tarot cards that incorporated characters and settings from Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland. I created a total of 78 full color illustrations for the deck, along with a design for the card backs. I wanted to pay homage to John Tenniel’s original illustrations but also make sure the work was “over saturated” to convey the weirdness of that world. This was one of the most enjoyable, as well as daunting, projects I’ve ever had the pleasure to work on.

"Eugene Smith is one of my very favorite illustrators, and I've worked with a ton. He has illustrated 8 or 9 books for my company (including several award winners & at least one New York Times bestseller). His illustrations are always packed with imaginative and rewarding details. He brings a million creative ideas to every assignment. He makes terrific use of light and shadow. He never cuts corners. And he has never, ever missed a deadline. We just hired him for a new project and I can't wait to hire him again."
