Hi! We’re Joel and Ashley, otherwise known as This Paper Ship. We’re an illustration and art direction studio specializing in whimsical illustration and hand lettering, branding for quirky businesses, playful photography, and book design and layout.

We work out of a studio in the woods near Hillsborough, North Carolina ( in the Raleigh-Durham area) and work with clients ranging across the US and into Canada, Europe, and Australia. In 2011 we also joined the Aeolidia team as freelance illustrators (but are glad we don’t have to commute all the way to Seattle to work). We’re inspired by children’s books, Mid-Century illustration and design, Victorian typography, and the past and present masters at Disney and Pixar.

We first launched as an Etsy shop in 2009 shortly after graduating with BFAs in Graphic Design from Shepherd University. With no job prospects to speak of and a tanked national economy shrinking the creative workforce, but with passion and plenty of providence, we grew our business and expanded it into a full-time working studio.
