I was asked by Kate Worum to create an illustration about water for a project she’s working on at WellDone. I often use Adobe Illustrator to doodle, to make an image with no plan in mind, just play around with shapes and color to see what happens. For this illustration, I set up a few simple rules. I wanted it to be a face so I began with the eyes as circular shapes, and then the only other shape allowed was a drop. The final rule was that the image needed to have left-right symmetry. These were my self-imposed rules, not ones coming from the client. The format was 6×6″ and the palette was limited to three colors. Not including the eyes and the smile, the symmetry rule is broken once, can you find it?
