The Room Was Black With Puppets

And so my latest digital project is complete!

This image is based on Darren Shan’s ‘Procession of the Dead’, book 1 of The City trilogy. This has always been my visualisation of the scene where the protagonist first steps into the office of The Cardinal, a tyrannical puppet-obsessed mob boss who runs the titular city. I have some history with this book associated with illustration as I did a narrative project based on this book in the past, way back in college when I was doing my art and design foundation degree, and this was the project that encouraged me to pursue illustration in particular. Now in the present day, I thought it was fitting to revisit what was basically my first illustration project and do a redux of one of my final pieces with the skills I’ve since obtained.

NB: The Cardinal has a crooked little finger on his left hand, so it’s meant to look like that!

"Huge shoutout to Will at WRC Illustrations and his amazing work on our 2016 Christmas card. He asked what we were looking for and had a rough sketch before the evening was over! Will's illustrations at each step of the progress blew us away. The process took under 2 weeks from first contact to final product and we couldn't be happier! Thank you! The Hobbs Family"
