I was approached late last year by iam8bit Gallery in Los Angeles, California about coming up with some exclusive print designs to sell through their gallery and retail space. They had seen my work in Warner Brothers spring 2017 release “Keanu,” the highly anticipated first feature film from Key & Peele of Comedy Central fame. The bulk of my work for the film was large scale portraits of Hip Hop artists to adorn the walls of the lead characters apartment.
I asked what they were thinking for the project and they said whatever I liked, they just really enjoyed my work. My two favorite subjects are portraits of hip hop artists and birds of prey, hence “Rappers and Raptors” came to mind and the idea stuck. I chose to do The Wu-Tang Clan’s Method Man with an Eastern Screech Owl, and Detroit-based rapper Danny Brown with a Red-tailed Hawk. I used the oportunity to practice and advance a new technique I’ve been honing for color, layering large abstracted watercolors over tight ink drawings to create more of a spacey/atmospheric effect. I’m really pleased with how they came out, and they’ll be available through iam8bit both online and in their store early this spring!
