A year ago I read an article written by Sir Quentin Blake about how we need more disabled children in picture books. It only then occurred to me that he was right, I hadn’t seen any before.
Coincidentally, this year I was commissioned to illustrate a story written by Khadijah Salaam about a disabled boy not given the opportunity to show off his basketball skills because he was in a wheelchair. Feeling down and neglected, he turns to his father and asks “Why did god make me different?” With dad’s encouragement through story telling, the boy finds confidence and takes a chance to show others why he deserves a place on the school basketball team.
This is truly a touching story, different to any other. As tough as it was to illustrate, I’m very glad I was given the chance.
