On Northern Lights and Golden Compasses

I’ve been a fan of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy since I was a kid, and I have this really lovely hardback volume of all three books that I bought myself some time ago as a treat. But it’s only recently occurred to me to try re-reading those stories that had my younger self so spellbound. And they’re just as good as I remember.

In homage, I thought I’d draw young Lyra Belacqua along with Pan, her dæmon – and I couldn’t resist attempting an armoured bear while I was at it. It’s not every day you get an excuse to draw something like that.

If Mr. Pullman ever wants to put out an illustrated edition, I hope he knows where to find me.

I have known Ollie Ray for some time now and, indeed, he became the illustrator for three of my books after I shortlisted him from a large number of illustrators who responded to my advertising. It was a decision that I have never regretted. As you will no doubt see from his portfolio, he is an accomplished young artist who is able to adapt his styles to suit most genres. He has proved to be a highly personable young man, dedicated to his work, affable - and a stickler for deadlines too!
