My cover illustration for the Indonesian edition of Jonathan Stroud’s Bartimaeus Sequence Book I: The Amulet of Samarkand, published by Gramedia Publishing.
I’m always excited to illustrate books that I personally enjoy and this is definitely one of them. Here you can view the process from beginning to end. The main characters were painted in gouache, transferred and finished in Photoshop. Bartimaeus’s face went through a bit of a change during the process, with him starting out more impish and less human, to a more classical genie face. I had a good time drawing the magical circle, designing it based on the magic seal of Solomon and adapting it into my own. Pentagrams are featured heavily in the book and I wanted to do it justice (personally I am obsessed with them).
The cover was well received and I’m currently sketching for the sequel, so the pressure’s on!
