The Falvia de Luce series from Alan Bradley is a treat to read. It has a cast of interesting characters, but I found Dodger to be my favorite.

A former British POW, now he tends the garden and is the confidant of Flavia. Of everyone in the patchwork family, Dodger – suffering from shell shock and nightmarish memories of war – understands Flavia the best and acts as friend and co-conspirator.

"..., I have been extremely pleased with my interactions with Amanda. Not only is she competent in her field, she is also a person with an easygoing personality who can help bridge the scientific insight of the scientist with the artistic eye of the artist. She is able to imaging what I wanted to accomplish and then deliver a quality product. "
