Live Portraits at the Jazz Age Lawn Party on Govenors Island

This summer I had the opportunity to live illustrate party goers with Drawing New York at the annual Jazz Age Lawn Party on Governors Island in New York City. The event happens every summer in June and August and I was lucky to attend both. Attendees typically go all out dressing to the nines in 1920s and ’30s attire. There are multiple jazz age era bands that play throughout the day, dancing, food, and other vendors.
Drawing New York is an organization that hosts drawing classes and other events and brings illustrators together with event organizers who want to add a live art element to their festivities. Party goers paid to have their portraits done by me and two other illustrators working at the event. We had an amazing time, also dressing up to get into the spirit of things.
Drawing live is one of my favorite things to do, I love the energy and spontaneity, and it’s even better when people have put so much time into the beautiful costumes they are wearing. As a fashion illustrator it’s a dream come true.
