I did this illustration for the Jules Verne show organised by Hire an illustrator. It was a little tricky knowing what I wanted to do for this. I’m not so familiar with Jules Verne’s work, but I had read “A journey to the centre of the earth” a long time ago so I thought I’d start there.
Normally I would illustrate a scene with much more mundane events, but as I was only doing one scene and had limited time I thought I would illustrate a more spectacular moment. I sketched out the image a number of times before it started to come together and then started fleshing it out by pushing the readability and composition with each pass. Colour is usually the hardest part of an image for me but for this one it went fairly quickly.
