This is my contribution to the upcoming Jules Verne show ‘Amazing Adventures’ presented by Hire an Illustrator. I am honored to be a part of this exhibition and to have a chance to work with so many incredible artists. My painting is a combination of block printing, pen and ink, and watercolor.
The scene is from ‘Around the World in 80 Days’ and depicts several characters from the book, yet the main focus is on Aouda. Aouda’s husband has died and she is to be burned alive with his body; a ritual called suttee. Phileas Fog and Passepartout happen to be traveling by elephant through northern India when they witness Aouda’s distress, and are faced with a dilemma… Should they save the widow from impending death or, should they continue on their journey, sticking to the rigid schedule they have set for themselves?
