This is my entry to the Northern Illustration Festival’s Illustration Prize. The subject is The Legend of The Hartlepool Monkey. Set during The Napoleonic Wars this is the unfortunate story of the ship’s monkey, the only survivor of a French shipwreck washed ashore in Hartlepool. The citizens of Hartlepool, never having seen either a monkey or a Frenchman, presumed he was the enemy and had him hanged.
The illustration depicts the moment of relief when the monkey finds he is safely ashore.
