Meet our new character Wanda, with her beautiful head full of hair. She is brave and strong, but she’s unhappy because of the endless teasing by the boys at school. These boys gave us a real laugh as we developed them. The bullies, the cat-callers, the hecklers – ever noticed how imperfect they are? Through Grandma Makhulu’s hair secrets and stories Wanda appreciates that her hair is a crown and something to be proud of. Our vision of Grandma is of a modern and contemporary woman.
This book is about identity and beauty, celebrating how cultural pride is learnt and passed on over generations. This was a really meaningful and satisfying project.
