Shortly before Season 8 of Game of Thrones began, I was invited to participate in a one night pop-up gallery show of Game of Thrones-related works in San Antonio, curated by John Picacio, official artist of the 2012 ASoIaF calendar. I wanted to play with the idea of pawns becoming queens, as they do in the chess move; to me, Daenerys and Sansa were the two most emblematic of that idea of the lowly gaining power within the series. While I chose not to give them show likenesses, I did end up stealing a bit of the color schemes the show had given them, as it worked so well with the chess metaphor.
