A recent cartography project of mine involved four maps of regions of the United States for “Deadly Aim: The Civil War Story of Michigan’s Anishinaabe Sharpshooter” by Sally M.Walker, published by Henry Holt Books for Young Readers. It’s a middle-grade nonfiction narrative of American Indian soldiers who fought in the Civil War. Mapmaking gives me a chance to dive into my more technical side. My other illustrative work is typically in the fantasy/fairy tale realm, but usually when I work on maps I am drawing real places. Figuring out the map layout in order to show all the necessary elements is like a puzzle, and I love puzzles!
