I’ve posted about Raising Dion before, but for those that don’t know, Raising Dion is a comic book project I worked on back in 2015 with Dennis Liu. The general premise of the story follows a widowed mom who sets out to solve the mystery surrounding her young son’s emerging superpowers while keeping his extraordinary gifts under wraps. It’s essentially Superman, but from the perspective of Martha Kent (Superman’s adopted Earth mother). Dennis is a great writer, director, and storyteller, and in addition to our comic, he wrote and directed a short film/comic trailer that released alongside our comic back in 2015. When we finally released both the comic and short film, after many months of work (years in Dennis’s case), the response was overwhelmingly positive and it was clear that people wanted to see more.
Then, in 2017 Netflix announced that Raising Dion had been picked up for series, executive produced by and starring Michael B. Jordan as Dion’s father, Mark. Shortly thereafter, Alisha Wainwright, Jason Ritter, and Ja’siah young, were added to the cast as Nicole (Dion’s mom), Pat (a friend of Dion’s parents), and Dion himself! There were a few set photos that trickled out here and there, but overall there wasn’t much released for a while. But at the end of August it was finally announced that Raising Dion would premier on October 4th, 2019! Entertainment Weekly even did an article about it and showcased some first looks from the series.
Finally though, on September 18, 2019 the trailer was released and I’ve gotta say, I think it looks awesome!
Since I wasn’t directly involved in the show’s production, in the sense that I wasn’t on set or in the writers room, I’ll be heading into this show like everyone else, not knowing what will happen, which is an exciting feeling. It’s incredible and a bit surreal to know that something that I worked on has gotten this far, and I’m honored to have been a part of Dion’s journey from page to screen. As of right now there has only been one issue of Raising Dion, but I’d be happy to jump back into that world, especially since I’ve grown a lot as an artist since doing that original book.
Raising Dion premiers worldwide on Oct. 4th on Netflix and can currently be added to your Netflix list! If you’d like to read the original comic it’s still available, in both print and digital.
