Lately, I’ve been working on a peculiar commission. I usually don’t see my work being exhibited in a gallery, but I was contacted by the curator of Celadon on the table, a show that will travel from Beijing to London.
Originally a ceramics exhibition featuring the work of artists using this Chinese technique, the illustration-loving curator decided to pair the ceramic pieces with different illustrators from all over the world to produce images about the stories that those could inspire.
Each piece had a keyword attached and each illustrator got to choose three pieces to produce three images in total. I chose “Master”, “Purity”, and “Ceremony”. Here are the three illustrations I produced for the show. Given that children’s book illustration is one of the main areas of my practice, I wanted to dig into Chinese mythology and folk tales and make the images look as if they were picture book covers or spreads.
