“A Scandal in Bohemia” was the first of Arthur Conan Doyle’s 56 Sherlock Holmes short stories to be published in The Strand Magazine. It was the first Sherlock Holmes story to be illustrated by Sidney Paget. Sir Arthur ranked “A Scandal in Bohemia” number five in his list of his twelve favorite Sherlock Holmes stories.
The story was first published in the issue of The Strand Magazine in July of 1891, and was the first of the stories collected in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes in 1892. The title has since gone into the Public Domain.
