Protector of the Small

I recently finished this character portrait as part of practicing a more book cover-specific style of artwork. Based on the Protector of the Small series by YA author Tamora Pierce, this piece shows the main character Kel starting her day and practicing her skills as she trains to become the first formal Lady Knight of her homeland.

I loved the artistic process of spending more time designing the image and playing with light and color. These are books that I personally love to reread, and it’s been a great experience to work hard on a piece that is so personal to me. It’s also so rewarding to connect with other fans of the character and hear how she has inspired them as well!
