2019 is the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission’s moon landing. In recognition of this iconic event, the 2019 SCBWI Narrative Art Award assignment is to submit a narrative sequence involving a ground-breaking journey, whether historical, personal, or imagined.
For the assignment, I wanted to pay tribute to women in space. Some 564 people have been into space – 65 of them women. With the first illustration, I created a dramatic entrance to a kindergarten career day. With the second illustration, the identity of the three astronauts remained a mystery with a strong suggestion they would be boys. The third illustration reveals the identity of the three astronauts.
