I jumped at the chance to illustrate the cover for Bitter Karella’s horror writing satire, Midnight Pals. I was asked to provide a monochromatic design of my own choosing and was also tasked with creating the type. After brainstorming with the author, I decided on a literary skeleton in a graveyard, ready to read the very book you’re holding!
I wanted my lettering design for the title to nod to the florid horror paperbacks of the ’70s and ’80s. I used one of my initial designs for the cover of the book held by the skeleton, as a nod to the horror paperback tradition. However, our favorite ended up being the one which evoked not only the flamboyantly frightening type of the period, but also the whimsical quality of Bitter Karella’s satirical writing. I also provided the flowing script for the subtitle and credits.
