The Little Mermaid for the ‘Into the Dark’ zine

My recent illustration for “Into the Dark: A Dark Fairy-Tale/Folklore Zine.” The zine collects illustrations from all kinds of different artists who come together to submit their own dark visual re-imagining of a fairy tale. All the profits the zine made were donated to the Malaria Consortium!

I was fortunate enough, as an artist who enjoys drawing mermaids, to get Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Little Mermaid” as my fairy tale prompt. The scene that I focused the illustration on is the moment when the Little Mermaid accepts the Sea Witch’s offer to give up her tongue for the chance to live on the world outside the sea. It’s honestly a dark moment of no return and a perfect scene to illustrate for a zine about dark fairy tales.
