The work I did for the book Os Segredos de Loulé was awarded last year with a Merit award by the judges at the 3×3 Professional Show Nr 16. It’s a great joy to have my work recognized and to be in the company of such great illustrators on their annual.
This book is special for many reasons. I got to tell the early story of our planet, from the Big Bang, how life started, until now, and of course, Loulé’s story throughout the centuries. Finding an interesting way to show that visually and in a creative way, allowed me to better my storytelling skills. It reinforced my love for learning and sharing what I learn with illustration and using comics language.
Using comics to tell complex subjects like these is something I love to do, and I have one of the writers, João Ramalho-Santos, to thank. João invited me to work on a book about stem cells, and since then, we have been collaborating in short comics about science.
It has a version in English, which allowed me to have readers that don’t speak Portuguese to read my book, and it was great to show it and sell it at Thought Bubble Festival last year. I still have copies available, if you are interested.
But what is really cool is that I got my parents to help me with the flats on a few pages. My dad has no experience with drawing, but did it anyway. My mother is an artist and she is always up to paint. They have always been supportive of me wanting to be an illustrator, in so many ways, and I have to thank them forever.
