Giant Glowing Green Mushrooms

I was recently contacted via Hire an Illustrator to do a private commission for a wife’s birthday gift. After talking with the client for a bit we came up with the idea of a family piece and he started adding little personal details to each member of the group. We went back and forth on a couple of layout ideas and settled on a fantasy super hero styled piece featuring all the members of his family on a group of giant glowing green mushrooms (one of his wife’s favorite things).

I penciled the piece over a weekend and sent him the sketch for approval. Everything looked great but there was only one problem. It was Monday and his wife’s birthday was Wednesday… and he still needed time to get it printed! Ack! Never one to back away from a deadline challenge I turned on the jets and got the inks and painting for the illustration done in one long day.

My client loved it, his wife loved it, his kids loved it, and everyone was happy. It was a great piece to do, a wonderful collaboration to see to the end, and a great deadline challenge. And now I can FINALLY cross ‘giant glowing green mushrooms’ off the list of things I never thought I’d draw as a professional!
