I have been proud to be part of the committee raising funds towards a statue of footballer Jack Leslie at Plymouth Argyle’s stadium.
Jack was the only black professional footballer in England when he played for Plymouth Argyle in the 1920s and ’30s. He was due to become the England team’s first black player, but was cruelly denied a place in the national team when selectors discovered that he was black and dropped him.
We have smashed our £100,000 target and the statue to Jack will be built! As part of the fundraising campaign I created images of Plymouth Argyle’s stadium and West Ham’s now demolished Boleyn Ground where Jack worked in later life. Sales of the prints helped towards reaching the total.
