This short series was inspired by a personal experience in my backyard as a child. I was climbing a favorite tree when my friend noticed a small hole in the side of a hill. His curiosity demanded he poke a stick into the hole. A swarm of yellow jackets came streaming out and attacked my friend who began screaming and running to safety. I panicked and tumbled out of the tree but got my foot temporarily caught so I was of no help. Eventually we both made it inside behind the safety of the sliding glass door. I had a few stings but my friend was covered. My mom soothed our (mainly his) many stings with ice and calamine lotion.
