For a few years now I have been trying to figure out how to pay homage to the Generation X childhood I had (mid-70s to mid-80s) and the love I have of the genre movies, TV shows, comics and books that I grew up with. Once I decided to re-enter the world of illustration, the idea of a zine project started to form in my imagination, that would not only honor the media I was exposed to, but also the media we read to stay informed. Mostly, periodicals and such, like Starlog, Cinefantastique and even the movie programs that one could purchase outside your local theater.
In other words, I’m trying to capture a “this is how it was to be a fan in this time” vibe with this project. Since last fall, I started laying out ideas for a few of the first pieces I would want to tackle. Star Wars, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, and Super Seventies TV, immediately sprang to mind. These are the first pieces of genre media I consumed as a kid, and they are all intricately wound into my DNA.
Throughout this whole project, I really tried to capture the feel and style of those early days, before entertainment was multimedia conglomerates with mammoth IPs. These were just escapist summer kids’ movies and simple TV shows.
