A couple of weeks ago I created an illustration called ‘Vesper Knight’, telling a tale through poetry of a knight of the moon. Here’s his companion (enemy?), the knight of the sun. I’ve been interested in the ancient mythology of the sun chasing the moon across the sky, and I wanted to create some character artwork depicting these two objects as knights. I like the sense of movement that knights have as opposed to a more static king/queen type of figure.
Anyway, here is the Sunburst Knight’s poem:
Golden thorns claw at the night
The darkness turns to embers
Dancing on horizon lines—
The dawn-light’s early splendour.
Son of universal plight
His body thick with fervour
Dashes with such torrid flight
And yet, he hungers further!
Never to be dulled by strain
His lantern burns eternal
Eager to defeat his bane:
The knight of all nocturnal.
