This is one of a series of portraits that I created earlier this year for a documentary about the Anglo-Zulu war of 1879 entitled ‘Amashinga’. For this project, the client requested that the portraits have more painterly look to them so after a couple of studies and experiments, I finally settled on this particular style. Although challenging, I did enjoy creating this portrait and I’m happy with the final painting.

Over the course of several series books, Simon has been an absolute pleasure to work with — he’s talented, professional, and detailed. He deftly translates entirely imagined worlds into amazing works of art that make those worlds real on the covers of our books. His talent speaks for itself in his portfolio and I would recommend him to anyone looking to work with an expert in character and scene illustration.
