These images were for a running magazine’s article on cheating in marathon running. It was really interesting to see how people cheated to win – I couldn’t believe it. Taking shortcuts, wearing more than one set of numbers, etc. I wanted these images to look very analog and sketchy to suit the article’s nefarious nature. As with a lot of magazines there was a small budget and a short timeline, so I’ve been developing a style that while still being interesting, it can be done quickly. I remember reading an interview with Milton Glaser back in the eighties where he was asked how he developed his signature style. He said it was all about being able to produce work faster, thus being able to make a better living off of the work.
