I got hired by NY-based French school and cultural center Coucou French Classes to illustrate their first deck of educational French-English vocabulary flashcards. My relationship with Coucou is long standing, and we’ve collaborated on many flyers and other promotional materials over the last few years, but this project was much bigger in scope as it involved 270 illustrations for words as diverse as “une voiture” (car), “une doudoune” (a puffer jacket) or the more conceptual “délicieux” (delicious).
This project got me to research and work on many shapes, objects and situations that I hadn’t got to draw before (a raccoon? a text message?), and forced me to focus on what worked visually the best in a very precise manner -for example, how to visually differentiate the train station, versus the train, versus the subway station… I absolutely loved the challenge, and the client was happy too; so we’ve already started working on pack #2!
