Since moving to San Juan, Puerto Rico a few months ago, I’ve been getting outside and painting a lot of the scenery around here. Most of these paintings have been quick 2-3 hour paintings done from life. With this piece I wanted to show the detail and scale I can get when I put the hours in. Photo reference for this piece was taken by my favorite beach not far from my apartment, Escambron Beach. I’ve since visited this spot several times during sunset but have never seen the sky putting on quite the show that it did that first evening that I shot reference.
This painting is 55″ x 42″ on Canson mixed media paper. I’ve always loved painting directly on a surface attached to the wall and it had been a few years since I had worked this way.
